Cavtat is a town in the Dubrovnik-Neretva County of
Croatia. It is on the Adriatic seacoast 15km south of Dubrovnik and is
the center of the Konavle municipality. The English language pronunciation
is "Tsav-tat". It was a Greek colony known as Epidaurus, which
in 228 BC came under Roman rule becoming later Roman colonia. Following
the invasion of Slavs, the inhabitants of the city established Ragusa
in the better protected place nearby in 614. Slavic Cavtat belonged to
Travunia. It was bought from duke R.Pavlovic by the Republic of Ragusa
in 1426.
